The internet has opened up a world of new possibilities for the romantic types spanning the globe today, but while the prospect of internet dating may seem to represent the future of many relationship startups in such a hectic era, the reality is that some internet dating activities open up naïve Romeo and Juliet types to a minefield of dangers.

Indeed, the notion of an enigin scam may be rather common knowledge, but the internet dating scam is a far less planned-for eventuality.

As such, not only will there be the usual catalogue of difficulties to overcome in making the relationship work over what could be a long distance, but there are also outright fraudulent tactics going on out there each and every day to really hit unsuspecting souls where it hurts.

The list goes on but the long and short of the matter is to never ever take for granted that all those involved in online dating are as genuine and well-intentioned as other, making a rational approach and a good degree of common-sense essential for anyone thinking of trying the phenomenon out for themselves.

But is it all that it is cracked up to be or would we be better off with good old fashioned chess sets and Monopoly boards?

Now I’m sure many you new age games players will tell me - you can play chess and Monopoly online as well now. I understand that, but the question is; are these versions (along with cards, backgammon etc) better than the old fashioned real life ones?

It is obviously down to personal preference, and call me old fashioned but i prefer to get around the table with my friends and family and feel the cards in my hand, or roll the dice and count up my armies (Risk).

But I cannot deny that the way things are moving this will probably become a thing of the past.

Now obviously there are many thousands of online games that are new and exciting and have been a true Godsend to the serious gamer. I for one absolutely love to thrash it out on multiplayer online Pro Evo or Fifa, and I know many of my friends would struggle to go on without online Call of Duty!

For me this is where you find the best quality online gaming - online console modes. I have tried to load up the ’free online games'websites, and have found them to be mainly full of Amiga 500 standard 2D games that do not excite the modern gamer. But as PS3 and XBox continue to evolve - this is where I see the future of online gaming. And even for someone who loves to play a good old board game of play a bit of Solitaire, there is no contest.

This area of technology is only going to continue to expand and I’m sure it will not be long before we are involved in online virtual reality game play where we put on a helmet and transport ourselves onto the pitch or into the warzone.

Sometimes I try to cast my mind back to the era before the internet, in the grand scheme of things it was really that long ago. I think I was around 16 years of age when people began to talk about the internet and some lucky friends of mine had parents who had it installed on their computers early on. The first days of the internet consisted of slow dial up operations, which meant you couldn’t use the landline at the same time - a frightful nuisance at time when mobile phones were not prevalent either. My favourite website at the minute is the amazing Skyscanner, which scans flights available for particular dates or a specific month that you are interested in flying on. You can even search all flights from the UK to a specific destination so you can weight up the costs of travelling to an airport not necessarily your closet one, to get a bargain flight. The greatest thing about Skyscanner is that it literally scans all the flight carriers so you don’t waste time visiting each individual website. Skyscanner is just one of sites I couldn’t imagine life without now, Facebook being a major other. Life without Facebook!!! - Now there is a thought!

Right now I’m combining two loves - one new and one old, or at least old-ish. The old-ish one is, of course, the British Broadcasting Corporation’s website. The BBC website is just pretty incredible - combining news, weather information, games, educational content for the kids, and that’s before you even mention the BBC’s iPlayer interface, which basically lets you watch or listen to pretty much all of the BBC’s radio and television output for up to a week after it’s been broadcast, or sometime even longer if we’re dealing with a complete series. It’s simply the best of all the British media station websites - although the Guardian newspaper’s is pretty awesome too. Right now as I write this I’m also watching the French Open final (Nadal is winning but Federer playing well in the final set)…hours of fun.
My other favourite site at the moment is a thing called StumbleUpon, which basically adds a button to your browser which takes you to a random website based on themes or keywords that you can set yourself in advance. As a little test just now, I clicked the StumbleUpon button three times and caught - a cool picture of some pavement art; a YouTube clip of a band who seemed pretty good; and a game in which you had to stop sheep running away from a field by clicking the mouse. And brilliantly, the last one was hosted on the BBC website. Whatever you set up is fine - you could probably just set it up so you were getting pictures of metal packaging - but it’s good random fun!
